Oskar Kakoshka

Some artists know how to create from a succession of scandals; Kokoschka certainly did. Almost from the moment he left art school he assumed center stage in the Viennese avant-garde, enacting its fixations on love and death, abandonment and deviancy. Painting apart, he worked hard to earn his nickname der Tolle ("the crazy man"). George Grosz remembered him at a ball in Berlin, gnawing on the fresh and bloody bone of an ox. He sometimes hid among the waxworks of criminals in the chamber of horrors of the Berlin Panoptikum, and sprang out with a howl to frighten the visitors. These early "happenings" (artist as cannibal, artist as criminal) were subtexts to the main theme of artist as primitive, untram-meled by conventions of any kind. O.K.'s letters were full of nostalgia for the innocence and vitality he felt had been lost to Europe under the crust of bourgeois sublimation. As an Expressionist, he was one of the last children of Rousseau, and he idealized the noble savage within himself.

That this "savage" was the cultural artifact of the middle classes whose values he longed to escape was no mean irony. Kokoschka's shenanigans failed to throw the burghers into the turmoil he hoped for, but they made an indelible impression on his friends, a circle that included the satirist Karl Kraus, the architect Adolf Loos and a galaxy of painters from Gustav Klimt to Vasily Kandinsky. His most eccentric episode was that of the doll. In the spring of 1912 he fell violently in love with Alma Mahler, widow of the composer and a pretentious man-eater. Their affair lasted three years, and she dumped him in favor of the architect Walter Gropius soon after Kokoschka enlisted in the imperial dragoons to fight in World War I. This, combined with the horrors of the trenches and the shock of being shot and bayoneted nearly to death, drove O.K. over the brink. He had a Munich dollmaker construct a soft, life-size red-haired effigy of his former lover, fetishistically complete in every anatomical detail. The doll shared his bed, and during the day he would dress it up and take it out. In Self-Portrait with Doll, iq2o-2i, Kokoschka is seen pointing with a woebegone expression at its sexual parts, presumably to indicate a cooling of the one-sided affair. Eventually, after he and some friends got drunk, he "murdered" the doll and flung it on a garbage truck in Dresden: the dumper dumped.

This bit is taken from Robrt Huges Nothing if not critical , art essays.........the artist Oska Kakoshka one of my favs. the episode with the dolly is worthy of a movie...forget Van Gough or Da Vinchi this is where the real action is...

Doodle

This is Old..I've kept it ..I like it..it was one of those left handed drawings..for a while I used it as my logo , but it didn't really sum up the illustration I do.. that's o.k ..there might be some-thing some-where some- day...

Roof top

One of the few times I've been to a dance rave thing ..not really my scene but hey you've got to look at all things eh?

Janarius

One of my crazy thoughts trading cards (kind-o-like Pokimon etc ) for martyrs and saints..collect them all..Christian martyr about whom little is known
he was a bishop of Brenevent and was martyred about the year 305..legend relates his index finger was accidently cut off as he was about to be beheaded , however he simply replaced the finger which was instantly healed.
During his execution it is told that his blood was caught and forever preseved.A phail purporting to contain the saints dried blood is preserved in Naples catherdral. A ceremony is preformed in public during which this holy substance can be observed by all true belivers to miraculously to liquefy..
It's fasinating there's so much in our culture still from these guys..for example the Catherine Wheel ( the fire work ) come from Catherine of Alexandria the wheel was the instrument by which she was to be killed apon...

Ricardo

good greif another self -portrait! this how-ever is one of my quiet favs..I don't know what it is.. the loose limbed form or the jaunty angle to the head..it sums a lot of things up for me ..

untitled and unfinished

o.k ..so this isn't really done but I'llthrow it into the mess and see what you think.. the face was really an after-thought..Iwas focusing on the clothes and the textures one day I'll go back and fix her head up..( pooor thing she looks a bit ..odd)

dog eat dog

A style test..nothing too serious

Ogre and child

dancing devil

let's keep all the devils together ( that way the zealots can breeze right by with-out feeling too insulted)
Light pecil work..it's a bitch ( sorry ) building up layers gradually and just like watercolours, too dark too soon and ( sorry there matey there's no turning back) you just have to either hang on and see where it takes you or tear it up with some choice swear words and start again..

Diablo's Rollerblades

here's the story ..one of my all time greats is Jose Guadalupe Posada..Illustrator , engraver all round nut bar...his work has been ripped off so many times that I'm suer you've seen at least one of his works ( keep an eye on a goth's t-shirt ) .He was a dude of his time..and for me ( keepin the artist /engraver thing aside..) he straddled a divide...his work was both aboriginal ( encorperating traditional Mexican idears and European) ..all round yummy ..his line work is flawless..
Anyhoo.. Diabo trades his pitchfork for rollerbades ( title ) is an attempt to grasp the feel of Posada's work..especially the stuff he did for the news papers..allmost the N.W of it's time...gaudy murders, gossip ,tradgedy and the bizzare ..check it out if you can find some of his stuff..

Nekid

O.k this might take some explaination....I'm in love with lyrics..( don't get me started on oral tradition and the BEAT poets..) one of my all time fav's is Talking Heads / David Byrne..Talking heads Last album together ( boo- hoo!) was NAKID ..and it contained some of the best lryics I've ever heard ..from Blind ( political psudeo rant / chant )
to bill ( see October entry)
here I used Grass is Greener .... I " borrowed" the text to illustrate them and had a ball with the loose limbed people I created..hope D.B dosn't mind too much..( unfortunaly I've messed up the order here..It should read ..
1.top right
2.bottom left
3.top left
4.bottom right
I know I know..a prize noodle

Coffee house ( unfinished )

yes yes yes I've drawn on my own personal experiences from the years in cafes to do this.. however this is the edited version, the REAL cafe scene is alot more interesting..forget Desperate Housewives / E.R / Seinfeld /C.S.I the cfe is where all the real actionn goes on..Ask ANY-ONE who's ever worked in the hospitallity industry and they could tell you stories that would curl your hair,( I know I could !!!! )
So this is kind of unfinished and I'm still waiting for that little bit extra..Hmm I'm not too sure ..It needs some high-lights here and there..hmmm

cat

This went thru several diferent versions before it ended up where it it is is today..it's one of those pics that looks o.k in the sketch and you think "oh yeah I know how it's going to turn out.." but after water-colour , acrylics and finally this computer stylalised thing ..it is an example that only certain images suit certain mediums....

Just a thought I had........

Bob v Bob

There's not much I can really say about this.. I'll leave it up to you ..

I love me

Ahh found objects.. for me there's something about something ( image wise) that some - one has discarded.. ( I have a whole file of photo's that have been found ..but I won't show them here ..some of them are TOO rude...)
this was found years ago and I thew in some colur..there's a quality about this ..the text is close to sad and or manic / self empowering..It's almost something some-body would say several times to a mirror every morning......For me it's perfect..ambiguious, mad, lost and then found again..I've got this taped up on my computer..

Bunny

love to doodle..love to see what comes from letting the line run riot.. Bun Bun started as a left handed swhirl while on the phone..I liked the shapes and blocked in some basic clour..yummy
